Mozilla Alumni: Building a community from the ground up

RESULT

Delivered Version 1 of Mozilla’s alumni program — including engagement model, communications strategy, and governance framework — culminating in a 40+ person Barcelona conference that moved the initiative from concept to launch-ready.

SITUATION

Mozilla had hundreds of former staff, volunteers, and contributors around the world — and no infrastructure to connect them. Alumni still cared deeply about the mission and each other, but there was no formal way to connect and tap that energy. Mozilla wanted to explore whether a community initiative could take shape, and if so, what it should actually look like.

TASK

Design and lead a global discovery process to understand what alumni needed, then translate those insights into a program model, engagement architecture, and live activations ready to sustain a community over time.

ACTIONS

  • Designed and co-facilitated seven gatherings across London, Toronto, New York, the Bay Area, Berlin, and two virtual sessions — using “unconference” formats structured to surface practical ideas and underlying values

  • Synthesized qualitative inputs from each gathering into city-specific learnings reports and a final synthesis, translating participant insights into design principles and strategic recommendations for leadership

  • Developed Version 1 of the alumni program: engagement model, participation on-ramps, communications approach, and engagement rhythms — built around a flexible, decentralized structure that put shared values ahead of shared history

  • Co-produced the Barcelona Alumni Conference, gathering 40+ alumni to finalize the manifesto, governance model, directory, and platform requirements ahead of a January 2026 program launch

  • Delivered executive-ready reports that shaped Mozilla leadership decisions on budget allocation, platform selection, and program evolution
